Safety with Newborns from Twickenham photographer Victoria Nixon

Have you even wondered how us newborn photographers manage to get our babies into those fantastic poses that show their gorgeous little faces and all of their cute little fingers and toes? Well I’m about to let you in on a little secret.

Now every photographer is different – my photography is more about photographing babies looking comfortable and content, and in as natural a position as possible. Nevertheless, for some of these shots it is still essential to have someone there to support the baby (usually mum or dad) to ensure the baby is safe at all times.

The key to safe newborn photography when attempting many of the popular poses is composite work. To effectively be able to product this you need appropriate training, experience and skill in both safe posing and also the magic of photoshop! Always ensure that you ask any prospective newborn photographer if they practice composite posing to be sure that they will take the time to produce the shots that you are looking for safely.

Now its hard to believe when talking about something as precious as your baby, but newborn photography is completely unregulated which means that you don’t need any experience, qualifications or training to become a newborn photographer. There is an organization which I am proud to be a member of, BANPAS (www.banpas.co.uk), The Baby and Newborn Photography Association. BANPAS provide a wealth of information to both parents and photographers and provide resources and access to education and training in the art of safe newborn photography.

Speaking of training I am super excited about some further training I have booked for next week with who is undeniably one of the worlds most well known newborn photographers. Do you remember the photos that went viral recently showing that gorgeous mum with her beautiful quintuplets. Well, that was Erin Elizabeth, an internationally award winning family photographer and one of Australia’s most recognised newborn photographers. You can see more of her work here onerin Elizabeth’s website. And yes, I am actually fortunate enough to be booked on to hands on training with her next week!!! I can barely contain my excitement about this so watch this space for an update soon
